East Meets West: New Jersey and UAE Forge Gaming Alliance

Get ready for a fascinating partnership as the world of gaming just got a major upgrade! The gaming regulators of New Jersey and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have officially joined forces, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to boost their respective commercial gaming industries. Think of it as a super-team forming to make gaming even better and safer globally!

What’s This Power Play All About?

This exciting collaboration brings together the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) and the UAE’s newly established General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA). Their mission? To work hand-in-hand on crucial areas like responsible gambling, cutting-edge technology and innovation, and robust cybersecurity.

One big goal here is to ensure New Jersey’s already strong gaming infrastructure and tech ecosystem not only maintains but also grows its international competitive edge. Essentially, they’re helping New Jersey stay at the top of its game on the global stage.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy personally sealed the deal during a recent economic mission to the Persian Gulf, highlighting the importance of this global handshake. “New Jersey’s role as a national leader and international destination for gaming is strengthened by global partnerships that drive innovation in an industry where consumers seek exciting experiences,” said Murphy. He emphasized that this collaboration will boost the international economy while keeping responsible gaming a top priority.

Mary Jo Flaherty, interim director of New Jersey’s DGE, noted their existing positive relationship with key GCGRA personnel and looks forward to continued teamwork. She proudly pointed out that New Jersey has been a trailblazer in responsible gaming efforts across the U.S.

UAE Leans on US Gaming Expertise

It’s no secret the UAE is serious about building its gaming sector. The GCGRA, which was launched in late 2023 has clearly brought in the big guns. Its leadership team boasts several seasoned U.S. gaming industry veterans.

Heading the charge are Kevin Mullally, formerly of Gaming Laboratories International (GLI), as CEO, and Jim Mullen, ex-MGM Resorts International CEO, as chair. Talk about a dream team!

Last August, the UAE laid out its initial blueprint for legal gambling and casinos, and they’ve already started issuing operator and supplier licenses. Interestingly, for now, they haven’t issued any licenses for online gaming or sports betting. New Jersey, on the other hand, jumped into regulated online casino gaming over a decade ago, back in 2013!

Mullally, who also serves as a board trustee for the International Association of Gaming Regulators (IAGR), perfectly summed up the UAE’s vision: “Commercial gaming is a key pillar of the UAE’s strategy for diversified economic growth, playing a significant role in driving tourism and attracting foreign investment.” He added that this moment is a unique chance to combine innovative technology with modern, collaborative regulation to unlock significant economic potential, all while maintaining the highest standards of consumer protection.

This partnership truly signals an exciting new era for global gaming regulation and collaboration!
