It’s a big win for Light & Wonder! They’ve just snagged a coveted gaming-related vendor license in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), making them the latest player to get in on the action in this super anticipated market.
Light & Wonder’s UAE Adventure Begins!
Imagine the excitement at Light & Wonder as they got the green light from the General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA) on July 18th. This isn’t just any license; it means they’re now cleared to provide both online and land-based gambling goodies in the UAE. Think everything from snazzy electronic gaming machines and classic table games for brick-and-mortar casinos to cutting-edge iGaming content for online operators.
Matt Wilson, the main man himself (President and CEO of Light & Wonder), couldn’t be more thrilled. He emphasized their commitment to bringing their “trusted, responsible, and player-first approach” to this blossoming market. Talk about rolling out the red carpet for a new adventure!
Who Else Is Playing in the UAE?
Light & Wonder isn’t the only one at the party. They’re actually the 13th company to secure a gaming-related vendor license in the UAE. It seems the GCGRA, which popped up in 2023, has been busy!
The first to dive in was Aristocrat Technologies Europe, way back in October 2024. Since then, a whole host of other big names have joined the club, including:
- Novomatic
- IGT Global Services
- Scientific Games International
- TCS John Huxley
- Pollard Banknote
- Fennica Gaming
It’s like a who’s who of the gaming world, all setting up shop in the UAE!
Beyond Vendor Licenses: Lotteries and Resorts
But wait, there’s more! The GCGRA isn’t just handing out vendor licenses. They’ve also given the nod to some other exciting ventures:
- The Game LLC scored the nation’s only lottery license in June 2024. The new UAE Lottery launched tickets in November 2024, with its first draw in December. Get ready to pick your lucky numbers!
- And for those who love the glitz and glamour of integrated resorts, Wynn Resorts holds the sole land-based gaming facilities license. This covers their colossal Wynn Al Marjan Island Resort in Ras Al Khaimah, a multi-billion-dollar project set to open its doors in early 2027. Imagine the luxury!
While online gaming vendors are getting their approvals, the exact launch date for iGaming in the UAE is still a mystery. But with all these exciting developments, it’s clear the UAE is becoming a major player in the global gaming scene.
What do you think about the UAE’s rapid expansion into the gaming industry?
